Local Foundation Offers Scholarships for Alzheimer's Caregivers...

The Ginny Bodahl Alzheimer’s Foundation has donated $2,000 as a scholarship fund for The Veranda, a local assisted living community wholly dedicated to serving those with Alzheimer’s disease and other memory impairments. The money will provide scholarships for in-home caregivers who are responsible for loved ones suffering from Alzheimer’s or other dementias.

Bob Bodahl Caregiver Scholarship will be awarded in the form of weekend or overnight respite stays at The Veranda to afford breaks to those who take care of a spouse or loved one in their own home and do not have full-time outside help.

Families in the greater Atlanta area can apply for a scholarship or nominate other deserving caregivers by summarizing the person’s circumstances and workload in 200 words or less and then e-mailing or mailing the information to the foundation. Responses may be e-mailed to ginnyfoundation@yahoo.com or sent by regular mail to Bob Bodahl Caregiver Scholarship, C/O Susan Rickson, 3040 Bellingrath Boulevard, Roswell, GA 30076. Cindy Johnson, executive director at The Veranda can be contacted at 770-521-9913 or by e-mail at cjohnson@goodneighbor.com. The deadline for nominations is April 16, 2008. Scholarships will be awarded at a ceremony on April 24 at The Veranda, 11725 Pointe Place in Roswell.

The Bob Bodahl Caregiver Scholarship was created to remember the care Mr. Bodahl provided for his wife of nearly 50 years, Ginny, who died at age 73 on October 12, 2005 as a result of Alzheimer’s disease. The foundation was created in Ginny’s honor not only to raise money for Alzheimer’s research but also to “educate, inform and encourage people to learn more about the disease and to find ways to stimulate their minds in hopes of preventing and curing” it.

“Our goal, as a foundation, is to go out in the community to educate, inform and encourage individuals to continue to exercises their minds,” explains Susan Bodahl Rickson, who established the foundation in her mother’s name. “In addition, we would like to raise money for local assisted living communities, Alzheimer’s care facilities and nursing homes in hopes they may purchase materials or begin programs for memory classes and crossword puzzle and reading groups.”

Those who want additional information can also contact the foundation by phone at 678-662-4029 or visit the website at www.ginnyalzfoundation.org.
